OD’s: Rob & Sue Ann Bickert
June 19th was not just another Saturday morning. No way cause, 20 Corvettes carrying 38 CCR members gathered at the WAWA on Hull Street Rd for a fun weekend trip in the Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia. As we traveled west to Farmville where we met 6 more CCR members than on to Bedford where we met up with 11 cars from the Virginia Corvette Club. After a quick lunch we headed for Floyd arriving about 1:30pm. The mountain roads outside Roanoke give us a chance to enjoy the superior handling of this true American Sports car. Once in Floyd, Roger and Judy Abshire were ready for us and provided a guided tour of their collection of limited production Corvettes complete with detailed history to go with each one. From Roger’s 1 of 3 C3 Greenwoods to his Schnieder Race Car this is a collection to behold. We spent about 2 and half hours there before heading to the Pine Tavern for a family style dinner. After dinner we had some free time and most headed back to our respective hotels for a little down time and socializing.
In the morning we enjoyed a breakfast buffet at The Floyd Country Store and than on to Roanoke and the second leg of our trip. Once again navigating those same twists and turns we so enjoyed the day before as we headed back to Roanoke. Where we were warmly greeted by Rocky Sink and his family who gave us a little history about the collection before opening the warehouse doors. It is hard to describe the unbelievable view you were treated to as you walked into the first building. It was like stepping back in time, everything is so well preserved. This is definitely a must see collection. There are many one of a kind items and I don’t think they could find a place to put any more in the first building but than we were told there was more and we headed for the second of the two big warehouse buildings which housed more Buick, Pontiac & Oldsmobile memorabilia and 50’s style soda shop (see picture on cover). But wait there’s more, Rocky’s uncle has turned most of his home and garage into a museum for even more memorabilia recreating a vintage service station in his garage.
Its hard to believe this amazing collection of GM history was started with an old paper quart can of motor oil. Thank you very much to both the Abshire and Sink families for a trip back in time.
